Up on level nine of the Nicholas Building in Melbourne, amidst the cool disarray of bits of wire, paint and pliers, is Katzinka, who makes interesting jewellery and useful objects. We were impressed with her studio from the moment we walked in (number seven, if you’re up on the ninth floor) as she had put out chips and chocolate for visitors, but we were also quite taken with her chicken and egg pieces, including the fried-egg brooch and egg cup with legs (below).
Katzinka, who originally hails from Germany, has lived in Australia long enough to acquire the rounded vowels of an antipodean accent, but still has a better understanding of the word kitsch than us (it’s German, after all), an aesthetic you can see at work in some of her playful designs. Her jewellery is available at various places throughout Melbourne, such as e.g.etal, Studio Ingot, Black Finch and the slightly more distant Zu Design in Adelaide.
