Sugar and spice

Everyone needs spice containers. Anyone who says otherwise will find themselves using crappy take-away containers to store their tea, cloves, cinnamon and bay leaves. And in the freak occurrence that you don’t have any spices in the first place, OWL prescribes a recipe book – any recipe book – stat, so you can learn how to cook with nature’s finest flavour creators. We spotted a fine collection of spice containers (above) at the Camberwell market, and then spotted a rather more ragtag and grubby bunch (below) not long after at Savers Brunswick. But what delights await us online?

L–R :: How wrong are these?! Aunt Jemima spice containers, dating from a very different era, USD$135 from Lins Antiques :: Vintage spice containers that could be from no other era but the 50s, starting bid $7.95 on Oztion, finishing Monday 21 July ::

Bottom, L–R: :: Twee rose spice containers, which would brighten up a modern kitchen no end, starting bid $25 on Oztion, finishing Tuesday 22 July :: For those without the time, money or energy to trawl op shops or the internet for spice jars, here is Ikea’s latest contribution to Scandinavian design, $9.95 for two (although you’ll have to battle the screaming children and stressed adults in-store).
